Frequently asked questions
Do I really need a deep cleaning, or is it an upsell?
A deep cleaning is for gums with real, measurable pockets and bleeding, not for everyone. We measure the depth of each pocket and show you the numbers and x-rays. If a regular cleaning is enough, that is what you get, and we are glad to give a second opinion on a quote from elsewhere.
What is the difference between a regular cleaning and scaling and root planing?
A regular cleaning polishes above the gum line. Scaling and root planing cleans below it, along the roots, where infection hides in deeper pockets. One is prevention, the other is treatment for gum disease.
My gums are receding. Can they grow back?
Gums do not grow back on their own, but recession can be stopped, and an exposed root can be covered with a gum graft. We can often use donor tissue so we do not have to take any from the roof of your mouth.
Does a gum graft hurt?
Most patients find it easier than they feared. It is done numb, and modern donor-tissue grafts avoid a second surgical site, which is the part people dread most. We can add nitrous oxide or an oral sedative if you want it.
Can my loose teeth be saved, or is it too late?
Sometimes yes, sometimes no, and we will tell you the truth after we look. Where a tooth can be saved, we treat the gums and keep it. Where it cannot, the same doctor plans the replacement, so you are never left with a gap.
You are out of network. How does payment work for gum care?
You pay one clear fee, with no insurance company deciding your gums need less treatment than they do. We give you a detailed superbill for partial PPO reimbursement, and our membership plan makes ongoing maintenance predictable.
Why do I need a cleaning every three months instead of six?
Once you have had gum disease, the pockets that harbor bacteria need more frequent maintenance to stay healthy. Every three to four months keeps it controlled. Every six is often enough only for gums that were never affected.
Are you a periodontist?
Dr. Slobodian is a general dentist with an oral surgery background who provides foundational gum care, deep cleaning, grafting, crown lengthening, and pocket reduction, and continuity all the way to an implant if a tooth is lost. For a complex, advanced periodontal case that needs a board-certified periodontist, we will tell you honestly and help you get there.
